I am trying to breed a Shiny Charmander in HeartGold. I traded for a foreign Charmander and breeded it with one of my own. I found out the exact number of steps until it hatches and then saved it one before it finally hatches. Will soft resetting at that spot work if I keep doing it over and over again or will I have to make a lot of eggs until it works?

Also, when I try to soft reset to catch a shiny pokemon, is it best to keep the DS system on even if you are taking a break from it for awhile? Or will shutting it off kill the settings?

eggs are preset to where everything about the pokemon is set up beforehand, like nature and stuff, so no.
