Shiva Dhanush was the divine bow of Lord Shiva gifted to King Janaka by Sage Parashurama for safe-keeping while the sage performed penances. It was gifted to Parashurama by Shiva for being a great disciple. In earlier part of her life, Sita while playing with her sisters had unknowingly moved the table over which the "Shiva Dhanush" had been placed; which was something no one in the palace could do. This incident was however observed by King Janaka and he decided to make this incident as the backdrop for swayamvar.
King janaka wondered by seeing the incident and decided to have husband to her as the one who had the power of lifting the sacred bow . Sage Viswamitra took Lord Rama who was younger to sita by eight days to the swayamvara of sita after completing the great MARUDHVI YAGNA".The sacred bow was brought to the required sabha mandap by 120 mihgty and strong warriors .After taking the order from Sage Viswamitra, Lord Rama at 13 years age went near the sacred bow offered pranams and did three times pradakshinas, thought about his guru deva and offered namaskarams within his mind, uttered three times 'HARA HARA MAHADEV" requested lord siva to give victory, several times thoghut in his mind about his father and mother, also uttered AUM NAMO GURUBHYONNAMAHA" three times and offered his respects to all the gathering in swayamvara telling them that he was an ordinary person and he obeyed the pitru vakya paripalana to go along with sage Viswamitra to protect the yaaga. Having said thus, Rama lifted the gigantic heavy sacred bow facing east side and stood sound less and made the audience breathless. This is the description there in the original Ramaya. Further here we have to see the nature reacted to this great act of Rama was tremendous and beautiful.Though lord Rama was swayam Lord Vishnu-he pretended as ordinary human being.
The Kings, princes present at Swayamvara are not weak or cowards. The Kings are very strong warriors if not they can not rule their desas. Comparing mighty kings with a child is not proper. May be Shiv Danush, a weapon of God might have obliged a child, since still today we treat the God and child is one. A child can not be a strong as a king. we pray God, we worship God and also doing Japas to get blessings of God. Rama is said to be an Avatar of Mahavishnu. He never showed his Avatara Rahasya to anyone or known to anyone except some Rishis. He also not misused his Avatara anywhere throughout Ramayana. I narrated the action of Rama before reaching the Shiv Danush. Rama prayed God, Guru, and done pradakshina. Still today we do pradakshina in temples to get blessings of God.
Many kings came to Mithila for the Swayamwar. Most of them had no idea of how heavy the Shiv Dhanush really was. They thought that they would very easily lift the bow, string it and win Seeta. All were daydreaming and waiting eagerly to the day of the Swayamvar. The city of Mithila was full of kings and princes who looked attractive in their royal apparels. The condition for the Swayamvar was once again announced. Then the huge Shiv Dhanush dragged by many hefty soldiers was brought into the hall and was placed in the centre. One by one, the assembled kings and princes came forward and tried to lift the mighty bow but failed miserably in their attempts. Most of them could not move the bow even an inch. In fact most of the kings did not even make an attempt.
sorry to say, you people agree a hero who is very lean and fell down for a slight air attacks a group of rowdies and give clappings in a movie. You are appreciating the movie Enter the Dragon. Anybody can win if they attempt to win, if they took efforts, but in this sita swayamvara the mighty kings did not show any attempt or took efforts. That does not mean the kings are weak. That may be a kind of laziness or effortless or a kind of ''no self confidence''. Moreover, attending a swayamvara by the kings and princes are a routine one and the mere attending the function adds respect to the respective kings and princes in ancient days. Further, a swayamvara means the princess will come with a flower garland and choose a guy. some kings/princes expected this here in this sita swayamvara, but it was different and no one come so prepared or this was unexpected.
i wish to say '' Flawless character and modest valour make one glorious ''. Rama prayed, worshipped, done pradakshina and finally took effort, attempted to win, and won. so, the Glory reached Rama.
