Does Using An R4 Card On A Dsi Effect The Console Itself?

I had been using an R4 Gold card in my DS and sold it on eBay. The buyer is now telling me that GAME have told them that it will not work because the console has used an R4 card. I haven't heard this anywhere in forums so I'm wondering if maybe a software update would do the trick?

not sure, might get away with it if it's a dsi, if it was a 3ds i wouldn't update it. [the actual ds]

not sure how the shop would be able to tell, i think that's bs from the buyer.

edit- i heard r4i gold was fake
